YMCA Swansea

Swansea

Major grant-funded adaptation works to Grade II listed building in Swansea City Centre.

The project emerged as a result of the client’s brief to remodel existing spaces to facilitate a multi-faceted business model, incorporating a range of diverse public uses, including a cafe, teaching spaces, community spaces and offices.

A rigorous planning  process ensured the adaptation works were respectful of the historic building fabric and context, while  meeting the client’s high-demand for multi-functional public spaces.

One of the key challenges was rationalising and optimising  circulation, enabling ease of access for all, whilst maintaining and enhancing the existing  structural and spatial integrity of the host building. This formed part of a complex phasing strategy where access was managed and maintained throughout the construction stage to allow the building to remain operational.
