Little Hill House
Rhossili
A series of contemporary interventions sat within existing barns and derelict outbuildings at ‘Little Hill House,’ overlooking Worm’s Head on the Gower Peninsula.
The result of a highly contentious site, the scheme has undergone a rigorous design process responding to constraints posed by its siting in the UK’s first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a Conservation Area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The arrangement of spaces within the existing barns are optimised by shifting circulation space to the exterior and lifting the existing roof above the barns to frame the stunning views to Rhossili Bay, Rhossili Down and Worm’s Head.
Two dilapidated outbuildings have been brought back to life and unified beneath a green roof to provide an annexe to the main house. In similar fashion to the barns, the southernmost outbuilding provides a shell for an intervening, double-height timber structure which exploits the sloping site, connecting spaces within to the immediate landscape.
The scheme received endorsement by the Design Commission for Wales at Independent Design Review.
